Promoting Tears of the Kingdom

Overview

For this assignment, I set out to create a promotional prototype for the Nintendo game, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. I considered a variety of user interface laws and principles to meet my goal of providing a pleasurable and effortless experience for users. These laws and principles enabled me to create a prototype that is simple to navigate and displays information in a manner that is easy to memorize and learn.

Project Goals

My primary goal for this project was to craft a satisfying and comprehensible user experience. Hence, I pursued the objectives of creating easy navigation, clear hierarchical structure, and memorable content. To achieve these goals I considered the laws and principles of user experience design.

Process

Project Proposal

Before I began my project, I penned a proposal explaining how I meant to incorporate the user experience laws and principles I had learned. I defined each law and principle, then illustrated the prominent ways in which I would consider them. While I delve deeper into three of these laws and principles below, the remaining can be found in my project proposal linked below.

User Interface Principles

Multimedia Principle

According to the Multimedia Principle, we comprehend information better when it is presented via both textual and visual means. I followed this principle by describing how to implement each gameplay feature through both text and an explanatory graphic of which buttons users must press on their Nintendo Switch.

Zeigarnik Effect

According to the Zeigarnik Effect, we recall incomplete tasks better than completed tasks. I considered this principle by underlining active sections within the navigation bar. This way users are alerted to their current position within the site.

Fitts's Law

Fitts’s Law states that users will take longer to reach small, distant clickable areas than they will on those that are large and near. I designed buttons with a large clickable area on each page of the site.

Final Prototype

For my final project, I designed a promotional website for the videogame, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It includes five sections, “Home,” “Characters,” “Gameplay,” “About,” and “Buy Now.” Within these sections, I present gameplay highlights, character biographies, links to purchase, and information on previous The Legend of Zelda titles. Takeaways

This project helped me realize how integral user interface laws and principles are to design. Though they are often associated with memorization and learning, they are applicable to all interfaces. Their emphasis on reducing cognitive load, aiding in visualization and organization, and acting with empathy towards our users makes them powerful. Through careful consideration of them, it is possible to drastically improve user experience and craft a design in which people will find joy.
